We have all heard land acknowledgements made in meetings and at events. You may have given your own. But you may also have wondered what's behind the words and how to embody the meaning more fully. Cheryl Burdick will host this discussion-based workshop for people who want to better acknowledge the land they are on, respectfully and accurately. This is a great opportunity for teachers, parents, students and facilitators to build their skills as allies on this land. We will talk about:

  • What is uncomfortable for you?
  • Where do you get more information?
  • What words are respectful? Disrespectful?
  • Why do we use the words we use in Land Acknowledgements? How much does word choice matter?

Cheryl Burdick is an elementary school teacher and is of Heiltsuk, English and Danish heritage. She wants to draw on her experiences to support others in this learning, and to learn along with them.
